To ensure the level of reliability and latency required by industrial applications, recent wireless communication standards explore multi-hop multi-path routing on top of a time division multiple access (TDMA) MAC. In this talk, I will discuss the benefits of multi-path routing by investigating the problem of real-time and reliable unicast transmission over lossy networks. By imposing a strict latency bound for packet delivery, we design an optimal routing scheme that maximizes the success probability of delivering the packet within the specified deadline. Simulation results show that with low-correlated packet losses the gain of multi-path routing is typically very small compared to single-path solutions.
