We will present three research efforts aimed at equipping software agents with explicit knowledge and associated reasoning mechanisms, for intelligent and autonomous behaviour. We first present work whereby agents use explicit knowledge about organisations and norms to dynamically compose Web services, being able to cope with exceptions. We then present the "Ontological Logic Programming" (OLP) environment seamlessly combining ontological reasoning with logic programming and how "OLP" has been used in a knowledge-intensive solution to the problem of assigning sensors to missions. Finally we present the "OWL-POLAR" language to represent semantic policies and mechanisms to reason with/about "OWL-POLAR".
