As traditional physical texts are replaced by digital media, the monolithic structure of those traditional materials can be opened to linking and text mining. In fact, the contents of the linked and mined texts can be modeled and the resulting models can become the elements of a new type of digital library. As one example, traditional scientific research reports are highly structured at several levels but that structure has not been systematically articulated. We are developing approaches to capture and use that nuanced structure. As a second example, we are exploring ways of describing the rich structure and contents of digitized historical newspapers. We are also using causal models for historical events to develop novel timeline interfaces.
