In this talk I'll go over the process and challenges in developing a mobile-and web-based data acquisition system. How crowd-sourcing works? Can scientists crowd-source necessary data from non-trained volunteers? How to sanitize the data? How to provide incentives?
During this seminar I will provide an example of a scientific data crowd sourcing project, discuss insights into the development process itself, talk about misconceptions and myths. I discuss what technologies and skill sets are required and what is easy and what is hard. I relate to the CS and IS curriculum and highlight the two polarized conceptions on skill specialisation of software engineering graduates: horizontal and vertical.
