This seminar discusses the design, building and evaluation of an interactive, web-based evolutionary system intended to allow the online community to search for "optimal" graphic designs - in our case flags - from myriad possible designs. Through this interactive design process a set of candidate flags is produced, representing the combined opinions and preferences of many users.
The flags system provides some insights into the use of the world-wide-web (WWW) as a public interactive design-making tool (a much more complex concept than a voting system based on a set of fixed, static designs). The results of two years of online presence are outlined and issues identified. Feedback and suggestions are sought with regard to the future direction of the project.
