Title:

Unlocking the Value of Big Data in Higher Education

Location:

Owheo 106 - 1:00 pm, Friday 4 October

Abstract:

Big Data in Higher Education offers an efficient framework for utilizing the vast array of data generated by students, applications, and systems. In particular, Big Data can highlight the uncertainty around how to allocate resources, develop competitive advantages, and most importantly, improve the quality of learning, teaching and research. However, recent research shows that most institutions of Higher Education are inadequately utilizing Big Data to inform operational and strategic decisions.

sIn this seminar, first the role of Big Data in addressing contemporary challenges affecting the institutions of Higher Education will be presented. Second, the potential of Big Data Analytics (BDA) to support instructors, students and policy analysts to make better evidence based decisions will be discussed. Third, a set of modelling and data mining approaches relevant to the analysis of Big Data in Higher Education will be described. Finally, an institutional research program on Big Data-University of Otago Technology Enhanced Analytics (UO-TEA), which aims at providing an institution wide capacity to create, utilize and analyse institutional data to support operational and strategic initiatives on teaching, learning and research will be presented.
