Title:

Overview of phenomenological rules of synaptic plasticity

Location:

Owheo 106 - 1:00 pm, Friday 14 March

Abstract:

"All our science, measured against reality, is primitive and childlike - and yet it is the most precious thing we have." (quote attributed to Albert Einstein). This talk will give a brief overview of recent phenomenological models of the so-called experience-dependent synaptic plasticity (i.e. the long-lasting changes in the connectivity of the brain due to learning). Phenomenological models are based on a premise that reality can be described by notions (like mathematical variables) that are perceived and understood in human consciousness and not of anything independent of human consciousness (like quarks, atoms, etc.) Will the conclusion of this talk conform to yet another quote by A. Einstein, i.e. "As far as the laws of mathematics refer to reality, they are not certain, and as far as they are certain, they do not refer to reality." ?
