Title:

Evolutionary Computation - a bit like Grandad's axe

Location:

Owheo 106 - 1:00 pm, Friday 21 March

Abstract:

"My grandfather had an axe - it was by far and away the most reliable tool in his shed. In fact, the only maintenance that it needed was a new handle every couple of years, and once he had to replace the head. 'I've had the same axe for fifty years, and it's never let me down!', he used to say" - Unknown

When is evolutionary computation still evolutionary computation? This talk will examine two examples of previous work where evolutionary computation was promoted as the primary contributor to demonstrated algorithm performance. This will lead into a general discussion of how a significant portion of research in evolutionary computation appears to be conducted, and the implications that this has on the future of evolutionary computation as a field of quality research.
