I will give a general overview of the biology underlying memory formation, from synaptic plasticity to gene expression. I will then discuss the implications of gene regulation in long-term potentiation (LTP), considered the cellular mechanism responsible for long-term memory in mammals. LTP has allowed a more systematic study of the complex nature of the long-term memory switch.
