Power consumption has long been a concern for consumer electronics, such as laptops, desktops and smart phones. However it has recently become an increasing concern for large-scale high performance systems, requiring new techniques to effectively manage power consumption. In this talk I will present some of the challenges in achieving exascale computing, and the role power modeling can play. I will then present some of my recent work on modeling processor power consumption and discuss some common misconceptions in the existing literature.
