Head-mounted displays (HMDs) have experienced a rapid improvement in resolution and tracking capabilities in the last few years, leading to them becoming increasingly common consumer devices. But they are usually only used for exploring or interacting with environments that are computer generated and crafted ahead of time. We have proposed and developed a prototype system which allows for real-world environments - made suitable for viewing inside an HMD - to be created in real-time on mobile phones, thus allowing for instant 'virtual transportation' by an HMD user to the location of anyone with a phone.
During this talk Matthew will explain the ideas and implementation explored during development, and Jacob will briefly discuss his upcoming work in extending the system and the challenges expected.
