The sounds made by a clarinet, a guitar and a violin are very different and anyone with normal hearing can learn to recognise them. But it has proved very difficult to program a computer to do this. To understand the reason, we must look at the history of applying science to musical sound, what we know and why a musician's understanding is important to the scientist.
