Title:

Catching the big Data Science fish - Which Way to Angle or ...

Location:

Owheo G34 - 1:00 pm, Friday 25 May

Abstract:

"Data Science" is making some big waves worldwide, and many universities have started offering undergraduate degrees in Data Science. Yet the shape of Data Science seems to remain elusive for a clear definition, and the curriculum design varies from uni to uni. Based on my involvement in planning an overseas joint venture, and my experience in teaching Otago's MBusDataSc, I will share my observations of a handful of programmes within and without NZ, and the outcome of mathematical teaching related to some key machine learning algorithms. With a final, slightly controversial twist, I will recommend a very different design as a possible solution for coping with the challenging diversity of Data Science, settling debates around questions like: how much math/stat/programming/IT/... should be covered?
