Title:

Adventures in Data Wrangling

Location:

Owheo G34 - 1:00 pm, Friday 20 July

Abstract:

We've all been there: trying to extract useful data from sources that were poorly designed, mangled, just plain broken, or simply not intended to be machine readable in the first place. Despite all the hype about us now living in the ""age of data" (big or otherwise), things really don't seem to have improved much down at the coal face of individuals trying to complete their everyday tasks.

IIn this talk, I'll explore (but not necessarily answer!) the question of why things are still so bad with regards to (in particular) "non-database"" data that many people (both academic and corporate) rely on. I'll illustrate this in the context of three different projects: one completed, one in progress, and one in its very earliest stages. Audience participation is encouraged. Caution: Seminar may contain traces of rants.
