About a year ago Otago implemented a spam detection system for email arriving on campus. This complemented the virus scanning of email already in place. The initial success rate for detecting spam was over 95% for most users. Around the start of this year the detection rate for spam began to fall rapidly. At the same time mass email viruses adopted new techniques for bypassing detection mechanisms and caused a number of outbreaks on campus. It was becoming clear that current systems for managing email security were due for an overhaul. This seminar will look at the new University email security system that is about to go live.
