The Moran process was introduced in the late 1950s as an aspatial evolutionary model. In this talk I will introduce some properties of the Moran process when applied to a spatial context defined by a variety of graph topologies. Recent work in this area, published in the journal Nature, has suggested that certain network structures amplify fixation probabilities for the Moran process. This result will be described and critically discussed, reflecting on theoretical results from the 1970s through to more recent results from Otago and elsewhere. Resulting from this discussion will arise a more general theoretical question: Does global fitness of a spatially-extended population affect the behaviour of individuals locally?
