Shared virtual teleconferencing environments like Open Croquet, AliceStreet or cAR/PE! represent communication in a closed form, where participants are displayed as avatars. Besides audio and video streams additional communication channels like body speech elements and gesture communication are integrated. Furthermore, the virtual environments allow for the interaction with virtual tools like blackboards, projection screens and 3D models. Hand motion detection based on optical sensors could be employed to deal with these tools in a natural way and would further realise the integration of a gesture communication channel.
This presentation will give an overview of the current state of research and will present our own attempts.
