Title:

SQL Standard and Its Implementations: Similarities and Pitfalls

Location:

Commerce 220 - 1:00 pm, Wednesday 20 February 2008 Note Change of Venue

Abstract:

The existence of the standard has been the driving force for the acceptance of the SQL language. In spite of its existence, several database systems support proprietary and non-standard extensions.

Using SQL/OLAP as example, we will show how database vendors can cooperate together to implement specifications given in the SQL standard exactly in the same way, so that the portability between different systems is supported.

In spite of it, there are several other examples, where database vendors decided to support different semantics and syntax then one already specified in the standard. We will use the implementation of table hierarchies in Oracle to show the differences to the standard.
