Title:

Augmented Reality under water

Location:

Archway 2 - 1:00 pm, Friday 6 March

Abstract:

Underwater worlds have fascinated people in all times and many attempts have been started in Virtual Reality research to visualize underwater worlds allowing to discover corals and fishes in a riskfree and comfortable way. Nonetheless, a realistic feeling of diving is never achieved by those virtual submarine worlds. Circumstances such as zero gravity and the sensory perception by the skin cannot be simulated.

To overcome these drawbacks we developed a mobile system allowing a user to view a virtual underwater world even physically under water. The system is based on Augmented Reality techniques and extends a regular swimming pool by computer-generated content. For demonstration purpose we created an Augmented Reality game turning the swimming pool into a fascinating marine environment.

This talk presents our mobile under water Augmented Reality system and the corresponding game scenario addressing questions like "Which devices are suitable for an Augmented Reality system under water?", "How to make an Augmented Reality system waterproof?", "What tracking can be used?" or "How to realize interaction techniques under water?". Afterwards we talk about the experiences we made in an initial user study.
