Title:

The real reason that Search Engines are fast but not very accurate

Location:

Archway 2 - 1:00 pm, Friday 14 May

Abstract:

In this talk Andrew will discuss how search engines work, why they are so fast, and why they scale to large document collections. A discussion of relevance ranking algorithms and how the performance of such algorithms is measured will be included, as will the problems of such performance measures. An overview of the currently active field of Focused Information Retrieval will be given as will a discussion on how this might help improve the quality of search engines. As a working example the search engine recently developed by him in the Computer Science department will be used.
